Greetings all you lovely creatures,
As a group of Milwaukee and Midwestern-based independent literary presses including New American Press, Plumberries Press, Pity Milk Press, and others, we are currently curating the 2nd annual Midwest Small Press Festival in Milwaukee over the weekend of May 31st through June 2nd, 2013. We would like to invite you to perhaps table, perform, present, spectate or participate in whatever way you might be interested.
The weekend-long event will take place in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, a cozy little spot full of artists and doers with a cooperative fervor. The festival will center around a book-fair at the Polish Falcon (801 e. clarke st.) on Saturday June 1st where small presses from throughout the region will have their wares on display and for sale. Last year’s festival saw presses from Chicago, Minneapolis, Michigan, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, New York, Illinois and Iowa as well as from other parts of Wisconsin, (some names of specific mention: Switchback, DoubleCross, Horseless, Xexoxial, etc.). This year’s event also promises to present an impressive gathering of the independent literary presence in the Midwest and adjacent regions.
Ancillary events throughout the weekend this year will include an opening reception at Woodland Pattern Book Center (720 e. locust st.), multimedia word based performances at Riverwest Film and Video (824 e center st.) on Friday May 31st, various workshops at The Polish Falcon (801 e. clarke st.) alongside the book fair, readings and performances at The Cocoon Room (820 e. locust st.) and People’s Books Cooperative (804 e. center st.), an afterparty at PUMAPUNKU on Saturday June 1st, and closing brunch/spelling bee/literary trivia at the Riverwest Public House (815 e. locust st.) on Sunday June 2nd.
We are looking for presses to table at the book-fair, performance and curatorial proposals, help in spreading the word, donations for expenses, etc. You can register for table space through the “registration” tab at the top of the page. Table space is cheap, at $15 for half a table/$25 for a full table, and we are working hard to coordinate places for people to stay in the neighborhood instead of a hotel if folks would rather. We are mostly youthful, thrifty folks and encourage those aspects in others. We sincerely hope that you are able to join us to represent what you are creating! If you’ve any questions or comments, please do send them to us at [email protected].
To send us proposals, requests, inquiries about donating funds or effort towards the cause, or any other considerations send us an e-mail at [email protected].
We hope to see you in Milwaukee.
